Code for Sustainable HomesCode for Sustainable Homes is the national standard which sets six, star-rated levels for the sustainable design and construction of new homes, by measuring the sustainability against nine categories. The Code supports the government target that all new homes will be zero carbon from 2016 and all publicly funded homes to be zero carbon from 2013. The Code sets minimum standards for energy, water and waste management use at each level and, within England & Wales, replaces the EcoHomes scheme, developed by the Building Research Establishment (BRE). EcoHomes is still the standard used in Scotland. The Code will provide important information to home buyers, and offers builders a tool with which to distinguish themselves in sustainability terms. For more information on how to achieve these levels read the energy saving trust publication.
