Code for Sustainable HomesThe Code for Sustainable Homes is the national standard which sets six, star-rated levels for the sustainable design and construction of new homes, by measuring the sustainability against nine categories. The Code supports the government target that all new homes will be zero carbon from 2016 and all publicly funded homes to be zero carbon from 2013. The Code sets minimum standards for energy and water use at each level and, within England, replaces the EcoHomes scheme, developed by the Building Research Establishment (BRE). The Code will provide important information to home buyers, and offers builders a tool with which to distinguish themselves in sustainability terms. Modern homes are designed to be airtight, creating an almost complete seal, which leads to the internal air being stale, unpleasant and polluted. It is therefore important to have the correct type of ventilation and to follow to Code for Sustainable Homes.
